13Eighty Chair is designed for HAY by Dutch designers Scholten & Baijings and takes its name from the 1,380 tiny perforations in its moulded polypropylene shell — a number that is both the design's defining characteristic and its identity. The perforations create a distinctive aesthetic in which light passes through the shell, producing shifting patterns of transparency and shadow that give the chair a visual presence beyond its modest physical scale. The variations in hole size across the shell surface introduce a sense of movement and rhythm to the chair's surface that makes it legible as a designed object rather than simply a functional seat.
The perforations also serve a practical function: they drain rainwater efficiently from the seat surface, making the 13Eighty equally appropriate for outdoor terraces and garden settings as for indoor dining and workspace contexts. The polypropylene shell is UV-stabilised and weather-resistant, giving the chair long-term outdoor durability without requiring special maintenance. Its stackable form supports easy storage in settings where chairs need to be cleared and redistributed regularly.
The 13Eighty Chair is a versatile specification across residential dining rooms, kitchen settings, and outdoor terraces, as well as café environments, hospitality terraces, and commercial dining areas where a design-quality chair suited to both indoor and outdoor use is required. Available in a range of shell colours consistent with HAY's contemporary palette.
The 13Eighty Chair is produced by HAY to the material and construction standards consistent with the brand's broader collection of contemporary design.
