Poul Kjærholm

PK9 is a dining chair designed by Poul Kjærholm with one of the most distinctive origin stories in the history of Danish furniture design. The form of the seat was developed from a sand imprint made by Kjærholm's wife Hanne at the beach — an organic shape that captured the natural contour of the seated body — and subsequently refined through a process in which Hanne sat in boxes of clay to determine the optimal seat form for comfort and support. The result is a seat shape of exceptional ergonomic intelligence arrived at through a remarkably direct and physical design method.

The chair's structure is equally distinctive: three pieces of satin-brushed stainless spring steel act as a single column, carrying the leather seating element above with a combination of structural precision and visual elegance that is characteristic of Kjærholm's best work. The three-legged steel column gives the PK9 a dynamic, almost animate quality — the chair reads as a piece in delicate balance, its stability assured by the precision of the engineering beneath.

The PK9 is well suited to residential dining rooms and spaces where a chair of significant formal interest and design heritage is part of the brief. Its distinctive structural expression and the story of its development make it one of the more memorable and collectable pieces in the Fritz Hansen Kjærholm collection.

Available as a 2D DWG drawing, 3D model, Revit file and ArchiCAD file.
