Designed by:
Arne Jacobsen

Oksen is a lounge chair designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen, first introduced in 1966 following five years of sustained design development. The chair shocked design circles at the time of its launch — its sharp, angular form and commanding physical presence represented a radical departure from the rounded, organic shapes that had characterised Jacobsen's most celebrated earlier work, including the Egg and the Swan. Where those designs enveloped and enclosed, the Oksen dominates and asserts.

The chair's name translates as 'the ox' in Danish — a reference to its considerable scale and the powerful, almost confrontational quality of its presence in a room. The high back, angular profile, and fully upholstered form make it physically imposing in a way that few lounge chairs achieve, and this quality has contributed to its status as one of the more distinctive and collectable pieces in the Fritz Hansen archive. The swivel base allows easy movement and repositioning without requiring the user to leave the chair.

The Oksen is specified in residential living rooms and spaces where a lounge chair of significant visual presence and design heritage is the central element of the scheme. Its scale and character also make it a strong choice for hotel lobbies, executive waiting areas, and high-specification hospitality environments where furniture is expected to make a statement. Available in a comprehensive range of Fritz Hansen fabrics and leathers.

Available as a 2D DWG drawing, 3D model, Revit file and ArchiCAD file.
