Arne Jacobsen

Ant is a dining chair designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen in 1952 and one of the most influential pieces of furniture produced in the twentieth century. Named for its narrow waist — a silhouette that resembles the body of an ant when viewed from above — the chair was developed using pressure-moulded veneer technology that was relatively new at the time of its design. Nine layers of veneer are shaped under heat and pressure into a continuous, curved shell that provides structural strength while maintaining a remarkably low weight.

The original Ant was designed on three legs, and the combination of the organic shell form and the slender tripod base gave the chair a visual lightness and technical confidence that was unlike anything available at the time. Its elegant shape conceals genuine ergonomic performance — the curved shell follows the contours of the back and seat in a way that supports the body naturally over extended periods. The 3101 model introduced a four-leg version that expanded the Ant's application to contract and commercial settings requiring greater stability.

The Ant has been in continuous production since 1952 and has been specified across virtually every building type — schools, offices, restaurants, homes, and public institutions. Its compact footprint, stackable form, and enduring visual appeal make it one of the most versatile and widely specified chairs in the history of modern design. Available in a broad range of shell colours and base finishes.

Available as a 2D DWG drawing, 3D model, Revit file and ArchiCAD file.
