Designed by:
Hans J. Wegner

The CH36 Chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1962 and reflects the influence of American Shaker furniture principles on Wegner's approach — an interest in functional clarity, honest use of materials, and restrained ornament that runs through much of the Shaker tradition and resonates strongly with the values of Danish Modern design.

The chair's structure is defined by careful attention to proportion and taper. The legs narrow slightly towards the floor and, in the case of the rear legs, towards the top as well, creating a visual lightness that contrasts with the solidity of the construction. The backrest curves more pronouncedly at the top than at the bottom, providing ergonomic support while contributing to the organic movement that characterises the overall form. The seat is available in both solid wood and woven paper cord versions, offering flexibility across different interior contexts and use requirements.

The CH36 is a dependable dining chair that performs well across a wide range of residential and hospitality contexts. Its quiet, considered character means it works equally well as a single piece or repeated across a larger dining setting, and its Shaker-influenced restraint makes it adaptable to interior schemes ranging from traditional to contemporary.

Available as a 2D DWG drawing and 3D model.
