Designed by:
Hans J. Wegner

The CH23 dining chair was one of the first pieces Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn, developed in 1950 at a time when Wegner was establishing the design language that would define his most celebrated work. Despite its restrained appearance, the CH23 contains a number of considered details — including elegant cruciform cover caps in the backrest and a hand-woven double-weave paper cord seat — that reward close inspection and distinguish it from more straightforward chair designs of the same period.

The chair's structure is built on careful coordination between proportions, angles, and materials. Wegner's approach to ergonomics is evident in the gentle curvature of the backrest and the rake of the rear legs, both calibrated to support the body in a natural seated position over extended periods. The result is a chair that appears simple and direct but performs with a level of physical comfort that more visually complex designs often fail to match. The paper cord seat adds textural warmth while providing the durability and non-stretch properties that made it a favoured material across Wegner's cord-seated designs.

The CH23 is well suited to dining rooms and kitchen spaces in residential settings, and its timeless character makes it equally appropriate in café, restaurant, and workspace environments where durability and design quality are both priorities.

Available as a 2D DWG drawing and 3D model.
