Designed by:
Hans J. Wegner

The CH24, commonly known as the Wishbone Chair, was the first design Hans J. Wegner created exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn, developed in 1949 and in continuous production since its introduction in 1950. It is among the most recognised and widely specified chairs in the history of modern furniture design, and one of the clearest expressions of Wegner's ability to synthesise organic form, structural logic, and craft into a single coherent object.

The chair's defining characteristic is its Y-shaped backrest — a steam-bent top rail that forms both back support and armrests in a single continuous piece, with the characteristic Y shape developed by Wegner to stabilise the bent form and provide comfortable support for the upper body. The seat is hand-woven in paper cord, a material Wegner used across several of his most important designs. Each chair requires approximately one hour of weaving by hand, a production reality that connects the finished object directly to the tradition of craft it embodies.

The Wishbone Chair has remained in unbroken production for over seven decades, a distinction shared by very few furniture designs. It is produced in a wide range of wood species and finishes, and in versions with both natural and coloured cord, making it adaptable to an exceptionally broad range of interior contexts — from residential dining rooms and kitchens to restaurants, hotels, offices, and public spaces. Its modest scale and light visual presence make it one of the more versatile chairs available for specification across project types.

In drawings and visualisations, the CH24's distinctive Y-back silhouette is immediately legible in plan and elevation, making it a useful reference point when communicating interior schemes to clients.

Available as a 2D DWG drawing and 3D model.
