The CH53 Stool was designed by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1966. It is a compact, well-resolved piece that demonstrates Wegner's consistent interest in everyday objects of genuine craft — furniture that performs a simple function with clarity and without unnecessary elaboration. The stool features a solid wood frame and a hand-woven paper cord seat, connecting it materially and formally to several of Wegner's most celebrated chair designs from the same collection.
The CH53 was conceived as a companion piece to the CH44 Lounge Chair and is available in two heights — the lower version proportioned specifically to complement the CH44 as a footstool, the taller version suited to independent use in a wider range of settings. Its modest scale and honest construction make it a versatile element across different interior contexts: as a footstool in a living room, an occasional seat in an entrance hall or bedroom, or an additional perch in a kitchen or compact workspace. The paper cord seat provides durability and tactile warmth in equal measure.
The CH53 is well suited to residential interiors where considered, craft-oriented furniture is a priority, and pairs naturally with other pieces from the Carl Hansen & Søn Wegner collection in both specification and material character.
Available as a 2D DWG drawing and 3D model.
