Arne Jacobsen

Egg chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the lobby and reception areas of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen — a commission that gave Jacobsen total creative control over every element of the building's interior, from architecture to furniture, textiles, and cutlery. The Egg was central to that vision: a chair that would provide privacy and enclosure within the open public spaces of the hotel, creating intimate seating zones without the use of walls or screens.

Jacobsen developed the form by experimenting with wire and plaster in his garage, working physically to find the shape rather than drawing it first. The result is a continuous shell that wraps around the sitter on three sides, supported on a four-star base with a swivel mechanism that allows easy entry and exit. The upholstered inner surface and the smoothly curved outer shell give the chair a sculptural quality that reads as a complete object from every angle — consistent with Jacobsen's principle that furniture should have no back side.

The Egg has been in unbroken production since 1958 and is recognised internationally as one of the defining works of twentieth century furniture design. It is specified across a wide range of contexts — residential living rooms, hotel lobbies, executive offices, airports, and high-specification commercial interiors — wherever a combination of physical comfort, visual presence, and design heritage is required. Available in Fritz Hansen's full range of fabrics and leathers.

Available as a 2D DWG drawing, 3D model, Revit file and ArchiCAD file.
