Poul Kjærholm

PK20 is an easy chair designed by Poul Kjærholm, handcrafted in wicker and leather and widely regarded as one of the most resolved and enduring pieces in his collection. The chair combines soft leather upholstery and a reclining headrest with a flexible matt-chromed spring steel frame — a material pairing that exemplifies Kjærholm's conviction that steel and natural materials could exist in a dialogue of mutual enhancement rather than opposition.

The spring steel frame is central to the PK20's character: it provides a subtle flexibility under load that gives the chair a physical responsiveness unusual in furniture of this visual precision. The wicker back introduces a natural, tactile element that contrasts with the cold precision of the steel, and the leather seat completes a material composition of exceptional balance. The reclining headrest further distinguishes the PK20 from more conventional lounge chair forms, allowing the chair to support different postures across different modes of use.

The PK20 is part of the permanent collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London — a recognition of its significance within the broader narrative of twentieth century furniture design. It is well suited to residential living rooms and private lounges, and to high-specification hospitality and cultural environments where furniture of genuine design heritage and material quality is part of the brief.

Available as a 2D DWG drawing, 3D model, Revit file and ArchiCAD file.
