PK24 is a chaise longue designed by Poul Kjærholm and one of the most recognisable pieces in the Fritz Hansen Kjærholm collection. Kjærholm drew inspiration from the French Rococo chaise longue but reinterpreted its traditional form entirely in steel — using the material's strength and precision to create a curving, flowing structure that he described as a hammock chair, stressing the principle that the piece functions by suspending the body between two structural points rather than supporting it from below.
The frame is matt-chromed spring steel, and the wicker or leather covering creates the suspended surface on which the body rests. The result is a chair of extraordinary formal elegance — a piece that achieves flowing organic curves through the precise use of an industrial material, unifying qualities that many designers have attempted to reconcile but few with the consistency and conviction of Kjærholm's approach. The PK24 demonstrates that steel, far from being a cold or inhuman material, can produce furniture of warmth, generosity, and physical pleasure.
The PK24 is specified in residential living rooms, private lounges, and cultural environments where furniture of the highest design significance is appropriate. Its formal presence and historical importance within Danish design make it one of the most considered specification choices available in the category of the lounge chair.
