Designed by:
Poul Kjærholm

PK4 is a lounge chair designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1952, constructed from flag halyard and steel tubing in a composition that perfectly exemplifies his approach to the intersection of art and design. The chair radiates a distinctive elegance through its light, minimalistic expression — a quality achieved not through simplification for its own sake but through the rigorous reduction of structure to its functional and formal essentials.

The chair consists of precisely two materials: a single length of flag halyard woven to form the seat and back surface, and seven pieces of steel tubing welded to create the frame. This reduction to the minimum of material required for each structural role produces a chair of extraordinary lightness and tactile richness — the woven halyard creates a surface of considerable visual and physical interest that contrasts sharply with the precision of the steel beneath. The PK4 demonstrates Kjærholm's conviction that industrial materials, handled with sufficient intelligence, could produce furniture of genuine artistic standing.

The PK4 is well suited to residential living rooms and private interiors where a lounge chair of both design heritage and formal interest is appropriate. Its material character and historical significance also make it a strong specification choice for cultural, gallery, and hospitality environments where the provenance of individual furniture pieces is valued.

Available as a 2D DWG drawing, 3D model and ArchiCAD file.
