Swan is a lounge chair designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958 for the lobby and lounge areas of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, developed alongside the Egg as part of Jacobsen's total design approach to the hotel's interior. Where the Egg encloses and cocoons, the Swan opens — its form suggests movement and lightness, with two wing-like armrests that curve upward and outward from the seat in a continuous, sweeping gesture that gives the chair its name and its distinctive silhouette.
The Swan contains no straight lines — every surface, every curve, every transition is resolved with the formal precision and organic fluency that characterises Jacobsen's best furniture work. The shell is upholstered over a moulded foam form, creating a smooth, continuous surface that wraps the sitter in a way that is both physically comfortable and formally complete. The four-star swivel base provides practical ease of entry and exit while maintaining the chair's clean profile from every angle.
The Swan has been in continuous production since 1958 and is specified across a wide range of interior contexts — residential living rooms, hotel lobbies, executive waiting areas, airports, and high-specification commercial environments wherever a combination of visual elegance, physical comfort, and design heritage is required. Available across Fritz Hansen's comprehensive range of fabrics and leathers.
Available as a 2D DWG drawing, 3D model, Revit file and ArchiCAD file.
