Designed by:
Hans J. Wegner

The CH72 Sofa was designed by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn and first presented in 1952 at the Danish Furniture Design exhibition in Copenhagen. It is a two-seater sofa of compact proportions, defined by a sculptural, fully upholstered frame, a loose seat cushion, and elegant tapered legs in solid wood — available in oak or walnut with various finishes.

A distinctive feature of the CH72 is the enlarged cover caps in the armrests, which conceal the screws securing the upholstery to the wooden frame. These caps are made slightly larger than strictly necessary for functional purposes, positioned deliberately and oriented so that the wood grain aligns with the leg beneath — a level of detail that reflects the approach to craft and visual resolution that defines the Carl Hansen & Søn production standard. Wegner's view that even small details can become defining features of a piece is clearly demonstrated here.

The CH72's flowing form reads well from all angles, making it a natural choice for open-plan living areas and spaces where furniture is visible from multiple directions. Its compact footprint suits smaller residential settings, and its combination of upholstery quality and design heritage makes it appropriate for high-specification hospitality environments as well.

Available as a 2D DWG drawing and 3D model.
