China Chair was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1944, inspired by the formal language of Chinese furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries — particularly the horseshoe-back armchair that Wegner had studied extensively in the collections of the Danish Museum of Art and Design. The design represents one of the earliest and most significant examples of Wegner's lifelong approach to furniture: a deep engagement with historical precedent, filtered through a rigorous understanding of wood and craft, to produce something that is simultaneously informed by tradition and entirely of its own time.
The chair's defining characteristic is its continuous curved top rail, which flows from armrest to armrest across the back in a single sweeping form — a technically demanding piece of woodwork that requires exceptional precision in both design and production. The solid wood frame and hand-woven cane seat reflect the same commitment to natural materials and craft that runs through Wegner's most celebrated work. Fritz Hansen has maintained the China Chair in production as one of the important pieces in its catalogue of Danish design heritage.
The China Chair works well in dining rooms and living spaces where a piece of genuine design history is part of the brief. Its commanding presence and refined craft make it an appropriate choice for high-specification residential projects and hospitality environments where the authenticity and depth of the design contributes meaningfully to the interior.
